Feed the Hungry

“I came to earth not be served, but to serve” …Mark 10:45

In January 2015, National Philoptochos President Maria Logus challenged chapters across the nation to  “do more doing”. Because hunger in American is such an unending reality, she challenged all Philoptochos chapters to reach out and provide 250,000 meals for the hungry.  Her deadline to meet this challenge was the National Philoptochos Biennial Convention in Nashville, Tennessee in July 2016.

When the Nashville Convention convened in July 2016, in an amazing demonstration of philanthropic spirit, Philoptochos chapters not only met this goal but shattered it by providing an amazing 750,000 meals!

The “Feed the Hungry” initiative had truly inspired the entire Philoptochos membership. While all chapters work with hunger in their communities, this call to action  on a national level was very motivating and energizing.

This significant number was attained by the chapters through a variety of approaches:

  • Teaming with existing community food programs
  • Preparing meals, serving and delivering them to shelters and other centers
  • Serving meals directly on the street,
  • Partnering with organizations that provide food items to package individual nutritious meals that are distributed either locally or internationally. These events enabled chapters to prepare between 5,000 to 25,000 meals at one time
  • Leading organized food drives for community food banks, shelters and food pantries

Packaging food bags or backpacks for school children, whose homes have little food, to take home over the weekend

At the conclusion of the 2016 National Philoptochos Biennial Convention in Nashville, President Logus issued a second challenge to the chapters to reach a goal of providing 1,000,000 meals by the 2018 Biennial Convention in Boston.

Philoptochos members throughout the country received this second challenge and “Feed the Hungry” outreach continued on many levels. Two years later, at the 2018 Biennial Philoptochos meetings in Boston, it was announced that based on the information provided by chapters, 1,343,734 meals had been provided by Philoptochos chapters!

Clearly this Philoptochos initiative continues to resonate with local chapters years after its inception. Each Metropolis has appointed a liaison who is charged with collecting the meal preparation totals from each chapter within that Metropolis. The goal for the 2020 Biennial Philoptochos Convention in Cleveland, Ohio?

National President Logus has issued a third challenge to all Philoptochos chapters, asking them to arrive in Cleveland having provided 1,500,000 meals to feed the hungry.
